Bipolar relationships are not always bad

Encouragement

I (18M) have been with a partner (18yr) with bipolar for almost 2 years now and having seen alot of demotivating content about how difficult it is to maintain a relationship with a bipolar person i feel like i should share my experience on this topic.

So my partner has bipolar and they were diagnosed last year december so about 6 months ago.

To give some context before that they reached a state where they got hallucinations and mood swings which neither me nor they could explain (we had no idea about bipolar neither was she diagnosed). Eventually we reached a stage where every week was an emotional rollercoaster which started with fights and ended with patchup. They would get hallucinations and would harm herself too but there was nothing i could do as we only met in school and lived far away otherwise.

Eventually she got diagnosed and we found out she has bipolar. They started taking meds, but that alone would not be enough. We restructured our whole relationship and started working on ourselves to be the best for each other.

I had severe anxiety problems beforehand already and was also going through chronic stress which could have been very bad for us. I went to a therapist too and despite family problems we both tried our best to slowly keep things together and heal.

It was important that in such a case that we forget our old fights ans focus on present and future. We both knew we wanted to be together and that is why we worked to improve.

My partner does not like to talk about her bipolar again and again so they handled it themselves and i focused on being as stable of a partner for them too.

I am not saying that after they were diagnosed there were no fights or conflict but we both learned to manage it. Because during each fight i started realising that its not worth fighting but worth fixing. I understood when they were actually mad and when they were overstimualted and irritated due to hypomania and when they were upset and when just sad cause of depressive episode.

And even though they didnt tell me directly i could see them realising too when they saw symptoms of mania or depression in their behaviour and they also took precautions and steps to take care of them.

Even in cases when they could not be consistent with their medications (cause of some family problems whicb were out of control they were not able to get meds sometimes) still they managed to keep themselves together.

In such a situation it is important not to pressure them but understand them, because i knew despite countless mistakes both they and i made we both still tried our best.

As a partner of a bipolar diagnosed person i also suggest not taking things too personally when they are upset and treat those times as a storm which cannot be stopped and just wait for it to pass. I feel doing breathing exercises and learning to manage anxiety is also important (even if you dont have an anxiety problem).

My partner is still improving but even afteelr only 6 months i have full confidence in my relationship and our ability to handle every scenario.

I am saying this after seeing their most depressive to their most maniac episodes, even after knowing that their symptoms could get worse unexpectedly because i feel what matters most is both my amd their will to get things together.

(I also made a guide on what to do during their different bipolar states , should i post it online as it may help other people or will that be inappropriate cause i dont know if its much accurate, it worked for me tho)
