Anyone using an above-ground variable-speed pump?

My doughboy pump sounds like it's got a bad bearing. I have seen a lot of talk about variable speed pumps, and I assume most of you guys are using them for in-ground setups. Are they as recommended for above-ground pools? If so, what are the better brands/models? Anything of note I should consider when looking into these?
