CMV: Society has become too obsessed with validating feelings at the expense of uncomfortable truths.

I’m not arguing that feelings don’t matter. They absolutely do.

What I think we’ve lost is the ability to separate empathy from agreement.

More and more, it seems like people expect others to validate how they feel rather than challenge whether those feelings are justified. If someone is hurt, anxious, offended, or insecure, the immediate response is often reassurance, not asking whether their interpretation of the situation is accurate.

I worry this has made honest conversations much harder.

Sometimes people are being treated unfairly. Other times they’re misunderstanding someone’s intentions, overreacting, or avoiding responsibility.

But pointing that out is increasingly seen as insensitive, even when it’s true.

I think we’ve reached a point where protecting people from discomfort is often prioritized over helping them grow. Yet some of the biggest improvements in my own life came from hearing things I didn’t want to hear.

I’m not saying we should be blunt for the sake of it, or that compassion is overrated. Kindness and honesty aren’t mutually exclusive.

My view is simply that we’ve shifted too far toward validating emotions and too far away from challenging beliefs, even when doing so would ultimately help someone.
