why is an upside-down cross associated with the devil?

now, im not very religious, but i am religious enough to know that an upside-down cross is not evil, its the cross saint peter crucified himself on because he thought he wasnt worthy or something along those lines. but everywhere in media (especially horror movies) an unside-down cross is shown as satans signature, why is that?
