Shoulder pets teleporting

On genesis 1, if I carry a shoulder pet, ride a boat on the ocean, then drop the shoulder pet, the pet teleports to wherever I picked it up. Since this is the ocean, it just keeps dropping them into hostile creatures which immediately eat them after they render in. Anyone else dealing with this? Kinda tired of my parrots getting eaten by jellyfish
