KCL CS Undergrad applying to MSc Machine Learning – Worried about missing explicit Math module names on transcript. Do I need a bridge course?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently finishing my BSc in Computer Science at King's College London (KCL), and I’m preparing to apply for the MSc Machine Learning at Imperial.

I know Imperial requires a strong background in calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, and statistics. My main concern is that my KCL transcript doesn't have modules explicitly named after these specific math topics.

Instead, all the heavy math was baked into my core and advanced CS modules. For context, here are my grades in my most relevant quantitative and ML-focused modules:

  • Foundations of Computing 1: 95%
  • Foundations of Computing 2: 88%
  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: 80%
  • Currently taking (Year 3/Master's level): Machine Learning, Optimization Methods, Pattern Recognition (Neural Networks & Deep Learning), and Computer Vision.

My question for current students or successful applicants:

Will Imperial's admissions team look at the syllabi of these modules and recognise that I’ve covered the necessary foundational math? Or will they reject me purely for not having explicit "Linear Algebra" or "Calculus" modules listed on my record of agreed results?

I’m trying to figure out if I need to take some Open University math modules or a 1-year math bridge diploma to prove my math competency. Has anyone from a similar UK CS background navigated this?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
