Can someone talk me off the ledge? I’m scared of the unknown and my doctor has not helped with this.

Question?

I M23 recently contracted a very intense case of oral herpes. A culture was not done, nor was bloodwork. This doctor seems to be very old school and just treated off of what he sees. It’s difficult getting information out of him as well, for context.

Five days after alleged exposure, I had flu like symptoms with a painful sore under my tongue, on my bottom lip, one in the back of my mouth, and one on my right cheek. The next day I go to the clinic for treatment. But now I have one more on my upper lip, and one more on my bottom lip. I was prescribed 1 gram of Valtrex. I started my dose that day because I want in the morning.

I’m on day six of medication. The sores have not changed, but more have formed. I have more on my chin, on my uvula, under my tongue, and in the back of my mouth. The only one that I believe might have shrunk is the first one I found under my tongue. The rest have increased in size.

I called my doctor about this today, informing him how I have not noticed a positive change since starting my medication, only an increase in the amount of sores. He was completely puzzled by it. He said the sores on my lip should have started reducing after one day of medication, and that the ones in my mouth should be mostly gone by now. I’m going back in once I finish my medication for a culture and further analysis from someone who specializes in infectious diseases.

Has anyone else had this experience where Valtrex does nothing? Is my doctor just clueless? I’m very scared, I have limited information, I don’t know what’s going to happen.
