How do I actually get good?
Sorry this is a bit vague. Ive been doing game dev as a hobby for a little over two years now and i still need too look up how to do pretty much everything. I think im pretty decent at coding and have taken several college classes on programming, but i still have no idea how to actually program a simple character controller and have to look it up every time I start a new project. I have all these good ideas for projects I really wanna work on, but I get hung up early just trying to implement things that feel really simple that I know someone with more skills and experience could probably knock out in an hour or two. On my current project I probably spent over a week just trying to implement a relatively simple top-down character controller, and i still know that if i had to start over from scratch it would take me just as long to do it again.
Obviously I know the "correct" answer is to just "read the docs" and study and all that, but as someone who works full time, has a toddler, and has ADHD, it's tough to devote my limited free time to just reading walls of abstract text about code, let alone actually absorb it.
I would just love to reach a point where I can throw together a prototype of only simple, common mechanics like running around and attacking in under a week.
