What influences renewal times?

Do we know what influences renewal times? How confident are we about these speculations? I expire in September, so I renewed in April not knowing there were delays. I was concerned, but I just got approved. Biometrics just scanned two fingers. I am from a blacklisted country. I suspect the essay they make us write might play a role since I write fairly elaborate ones.
