Homeless kid trying to get by
Hi for some context, I am 17 years old living in the state of Alabama since the age of 14 me and my mom have constantly gotten into physical and verbal altercation in May 2023 she called the police on a domestic violence charge. I was found guilty, even though she put her hands on me first through corporal punishment. I continue to go back in December after getting kicked out since I was on probation, I was found guilty of violating my 7 PM curfew. I spent a few months in a facility that was up north. I then went back to Juvie for violating my curfew when my mom kicked me out for three more times ever since then i went to a total of 2 Juvinle facilities and the juvenile youth center 6 times . Arounf 16 I gained a little bit of common sense and started to stay home when she tried to “kick me out. I got a job and paid off my probation in September 2025 around November me and my mom got into it again and she threw all my stuff out the window and trash bags and told me to never come back and would not let me grab said trash bags and I left the house and since I was not on probation, the police could not pick me up and take me to juvenile. I continue to go to school and even got recognized by a police officer at my job. He ran my name and my mom filed a missing person’s report for me. The officer called my mom and she said that I’m going to leave anyways, and that she no longer wants me in her life. The officer let me return back to work. I’ve tried to talk to the school counselor and DHR, which is Alabama‘s version of CPS. I even went to their headquarters in my county and spoke in a private booth reporting child abuse, and my situation they told me they would be in contact with me and that was in December of last year. I had an incident over spring break. And got in trouble with my boyfriend in Gulf Shores. My mom picked me up from the police station but then continue to try and hit me and punch me and told me to leave so I left again I had to go to my court case in a different county and got a ride there every time my mom stated that she wanted me in Juvie and did not want me back home. I of course, did not want to go home because of the physical abuse I had 2 More Court cases one which she did not show up on in another which she did, I ended up printing pictures of her documented abuse. My charges were dismissed because I was not guilty of what occurred in Gulf Shores. I was just simply caught in the crossfire. My mom was dismissed from the courtroom because of the abusive text messages that were shown she acted disorderly. My attorney told me to quickly grab my things not to go home because the state of Alabama said it was unsafe to return. That was around three months ago. My dad is not in my life and has verbally stated to me that he wants nothing to do with me. He has nine other children and only fathers two of them right now. I am in a dark spot because in Alabama, you have to legally be 18 to get emancipated and you are not considered an adult until you were 19 because of my age I have to wait another eight months in order for me to get a emancipated. I cannot open a bank account under my name get a card call my insurance. I don’t have my birth certificate or my social only paper copies that I got to the school and cannot enter a law abiding agreement or contract because of my age in my state laws. I’m currently staying with a family who are foster parents to one of my friends I have my own room and everything but they’ve previously filed a petition to take custody of my friend and because she is in “non life-threatening situation “ the police force and court does not have a rush on her case, that discouraged my current almost adoptive parents to filing for emergency custody because nobody has paid attention to my situation. I have not been appointed a guardian ad lit em and no public defender has ever helped me because I was always found guilty in my cases. This is the first case that was ever dismissed with my mom. I’m in a tough spot because I don’t know where to find legal aid. I’m working two jobs trying to provide for myself and I don’t even have a car. I don’t know what to do or where to seek help. It seems that I tried to do everything that I can like. Try and talk to my attorney about my case and he said that because it is not my residential county that that has nothing to do with him my state juvenile facility always found me guilty and domestic violence, and never appointed me somebody to try and help me out my situation the school has even called DHR multiple times. I even distinctly remember in middle school when they came to take pictures of belt welts on my leg. This was a common occurrence with my sister who ran away when she was 17 and has not returned. She is currently 22. She stole money from me when I was a little and turned to drugs, so her residence is not an option and is not a safe environment either I’m getting helped through the school enrolling and buying supplies, but I can’t do anything else. It’s hard to live with no guardianship or legal rights over myself I’m struggling every day and I’m living off southern hospitality. People are helping me because they feel bad and not because it’s the legal thing to do I want to have legal rights over myself somebody please help me. I finally escaped the abusive household, but now I don’t know what to do.
