Cityscape vs Street Photography -- a discussion
Hi guys! Hayden here, one of the mods of Truth Philippines.
Let's discuss Cityscape vs Street Photography. When I saw Sir u/rainjit21 picture of people crossing an overpass, my impression was it's more of Street Photography. Kaso, our street photography sub r/KalyePictures is not that populated yet, so we'll accept it here for now.
I've attended to create a local PH street photography sub before, but the account who created it got banned. Thus, r/StreetPhotographyPH is not searchable, nor it can be created. So r/KalyePictures is the next name that comes in my mind, in tune with r/PilipinasPictures (for travel photos in the Philippines).
So, Cityscape vs Street Photography. How to distinguish. I hope Sir u/rainjit21 (one of the first Redditors who posted in our niche subs) would agree on the things I said about the two subjects:
"I think what distinguishes Cityscape from Street Photography is the focus or subject of the picture. Although both take place in urban environment, Cityscape focuses on the city itself -- buildings, skylines, bridges and urban landscapes.
If there are people in cityscape photos, they're usually small or secondary to the scene. Often cityscape emphasizes architecture, composition, light and scale of the city. It frequently uses wide-angle lenses and elevated viewpoints.
Street photography, on the other hand, focuses on everyday life in public spaces. My attention was drawn to the people crossing the overpass, their movement -- and the overpass seems secondary. Street Photography usually have people as the subject.
Street photography often uses normal or short telephoto lenses, street level. It emphasizes human moments, emotions, interactions and storytelling. Your picture does all that. Plus, street photography often relies on capturing spontaneous, candid moments."
I invite you guys to share insights in the comments on how to distinguish a street photography image versus a Cityscape image. Speak your mind guys! The subs of Truth Philippines are for Redditors like you :)
