Torn on whether to buy or wait things out…
My husband and I have been together for 15 years, married for 8 of those and we’ve rented together our entire relationship because money just wasn’t there for us like we needed it to be. Now, we’re doing well for ourselves: he has a full time job as a software developer (income is $84k), and I just landed a position making around $95k. We do have some debt that we’re going to get serious about paying down over the next 6 months, so we’ll be in a decent position once our lease is up to look at buying.
My holdup is his parents. They built the house they live in, it’s my husband’s childhood home and he loves it and wants to take it over. It’s completely paid off, and they’ve kept it in immaculate condition (boomers man… sometimes they do the good things).
I WANT to wait, because I also love the house and we’ve made memories there and have helped with the updates and given our thoughts/opinions on it. But I’m also tired of renting and I want something that is fully ours, and we have no idea when they’re going to be ready to have that discussion or if they’re even really amenable to us taking it over (ideally they know since my husband has expressed this, and it would hopefully be soon, since they’re mid-70’s and shouldn’t be doing multiple flights of stairs every day).
What would you do? I know it seems like a no brainer, and we’re renting a decent house currently that we could stay in for another year or two. I’m just getting antsy.
