Ukrainians have turned Russian fuel station listings into a digital battlefield, using VPNs to edit map statuses in real time and mark empty stations as supplied while marking supplied stations as empty, according to TechRadar’s reporting on the tactic. The activity has spread across Reddit and social media as a coordinated online campaign, with participants explicitly instructed to connect through a VPN before making the edits.

Pro-Ukraine activist group NAFO has streamlined the process by launching a dedicated website that lets users select a Russian region and city, enter a nickname, and save their progress as they edit fuel station statuses, according to posts describing the tool. The stated goal is straightforward disruption: waste drivers’ time, burn their extra fuel searching for pumps that don’t actually have supply, create unnecessary traffic jams, and spread confusion across Russia’s fuel distribution network.

The campaign fits into a broader pattern of Ukrainian digital activism during the war, where VPNs have been used not just to bypass censorship but to actively participate in low-cost, high-friction disruption efforts aimed at Russian infrastructure and daily life. Unlike a cyberattack on physical systems, this tactic works entirely by manipulating publicly editable map data, making it cheap to run and difficult to fully stop.
