5 tola gold bar down 7%, thinking of downsizing to 2 tola instead of holding. Sanity check? 🫥
TL;DR: Went too heavy into gold (68% of my portfolio), it's down 7% and I'm sitting on a 175k paper loss. Thinking of selling the 5 tola bar, buying back just 2 tola, and parking the rest in money market for now, with real estate and PSX equities as future targets. Want a gut check on whether that's smart or whether I'm just panic trimming a position I should ride out.
So here's the situation. Bought 5 tola of gold at 466,500/tola (2,337,500 total). It's dropped to around 433,000/tola since, so I'm down about 172,500 on paper. Gold ended up being 68% of my whole portfolio (rest is a Meezan ETF position, a money market fund, and some cash).
The plan I'm weighing: sell the 5 tola bar, buy back only 2 tola, and move the freed-up 1.3M into money market for now. Real estate and PSX equities are the future targets for that cash, gold eventually settling around 20% of the portfolio long term.
Two things I'd love a real gut check on:
- Does it make sense to eat a ~175k realized loss? Gold is alrady about 30 percent down from ATH but 3500 usd or even lower per ounce is also on the table. It could take few years for me to even breakeven purchase price.
- 30% real estate / 25% equities / 25% money market / 20% gold sound like a sane long-term shape?
Not trying to call the bottom here, just trying to fix a sizing mistake without making a second one. Tell me if I'm overthinking the realized vs unrealized loss thing.
