Need help guiding my current counsel

I have a pretty complex case. The short version is I have a dispute with my HOA. The long version is a non-disclosed multi-million dollar construction defect case involving elements of fraud, real estate transaction non disclosure and funds earmarked for remediation that are missing.

I went with a seasoned HOA attorney that's experienced with litigation. This post isn't about my matter, it's about how I can most effectively guide my counsel. After about $20k in bills and letter demands, looking at my files, chronology etc his conversation about the overdue preliminary analysis was very similar to my onboarding call. It was painfully obvious many things weren't read and he forgot his previous recommendation of "get a professional engineering report, find the defects, get the cost to cure." I did all that and he didn't recall this for example.

I get that lawyers are busy with many cases, and this is a complicated case with a lot of elements to it. So this is more of a question for partners and more seasoned lawyers out there, how can I best guide my lawyer without micromanaging him? My current job isn't law but it is managing people and projects and I know when someone is "spinning their wheels" and this is it.
