How to best use foundation stick

Hi! I got Dior foundation stick for travels, but have been having a hard time applying it smoothly. For context I am oily skin.

At home I usually use liquid foundation which blends easily. With the stick, even after skincare, I noticed "patchy" skin - I wish I have taken a pic, but basically it looked like some spots did not get the foundation evenly and some foundation sat into my pores? I have tried using brush or fingers.

Would love advice on how to best use the stick formula! 🥲
