Injured during summer employment- if I resign will I still have income?

So I am working a full time job during the summer months but as I was in training to begin this position I injured my back (3 herniated discs) badly from lifting inventory at work.
I went to the hospital, and filed all the necessary documents to WSIB and have been off work for going on three weeks now.
My issue is that my physiotherapist recommended that I take another week off and then start working 4 hours a day and then gradually increase my hours bi-weekly, or best case scenario, weekly. This would essentially take me to the end of my contract. My employer said to me that if I felt I was unable to do the job due to this injury that I should let them know immediately so they can find a replacement. This job works with youth so it’s pretty important that they have the right ratio of employees to participants.

So my question is, if I mentioned to the person assigned to my case at WSIB that I need to resign, would my loss of wages still be covered? I also need physio and chiro almost daily at this point still so if I were to go back to work I would need to leave room in my schedule to attend those appointments as well.

I am worried that I am going to loose all my income if I were to resign, despite it being the more considerate thing to do for my employer. I am a student headed back to uni at the end of summer so I really need some kind of income.

Thanks and I welcome any expertise or advice!
