How I figure out what WordPress hosting a site actually needs before buying

A lot of WordPress hosting advice is basically “just pick a popular host,” but that doesn’t really help when your site has different needs depending on traffic, media usage, features, and budget.

I’ve started looking at hosting more like a requirements-matching problem instead of a brand problem.

The main things I usually check are:

  • Website type, like blog, business site, or something more resource-heavy.
  • Expected monthly visitors.
  • Number of WordPress sites.
  • usage, especially if the site has lots of images or large files.
  • Media
  • Whether things like email hosting, staging, backups, or security tools are needed.
  • Target audience location and monthly budget.

Once you map those inputs, it gets easier to tell whether a site only needs basic shared hosting or whether it should be on something with better performance features and management tools.

I got tired of checking this manually each time, so I built a free WordPress Hosting Requirements Checker that helps estimate the technical requirements before choosing a plan.

Full disclosure: I built it and host it myself. It’s free and doesn’t need signup: https://www.beingoptimist.com/tools/wordpress-hosting-requirements-checker/

Curious how others here choose hosting — do you compare hosts first, or do you define site requirements first?
