How much is casual American soccer conversation hampered by the lack of stats?
The most popular American sports are very stat heavy. All of them consist of repeated short sequences and you can pull all kinds of numbers from them. Subsequently, a lot of American sports talk revolves around stats.
Soccer gameplay is less well-defined in terms of sequences and actions. There's a lot of just random play. Minutes of passing around. You can win a match with just one shot on goal. How do you draw compelling stats from that?
And while soccer stats have developed a lot over the years, there's still very little that is accessible or interesting to the average fan. Subjective player grades are still the most common way to evaluate performances.
I believe that is partly why people like Bill have to resort to a) very abstract ideas of 'giving a shit' or 'having poise' or b) very simplistic ideas of 'why can't our players be taller/faster.'
Like maybe, just maybe, a player gains poise and grace by having great ability on the ball and is never in a great hurry. But how do you put first touch into numbers?
