noticing signs of neurodivergency from my childhood

General Question/Discussion

hi, this is my first post on reddit- i was diagnosed with ADHD about 6 months ago. since then ive been reflecting a lot on my childhood, and ive realized that there were a few signs of neurodivergency that i think went unnoticed. i feel a lot of this is because i wasn't ever really a "bad" kid and i always did well in school. i was diagnosed w ARFID when i was younger and struggled a lot with food- i fixiated on specific foods a lot. i also had a hard time making friends and still do. when i think back to elementary and middle school i kinda realized how different i was from other kids and i remember being confused and feeling like i was missing something everyone else understood lol. i was talking with my aunt recently and she also shared a few things she noticed herself. she used to watch me a lot when i was younger and she said i would really struggle with specific textures on clothes; i hated wearing socks and i do remember being totally unable to wear jeans bc of the feeling. she also said i would either be completely disinterested in anything and then suddenly become really engaged. i would also seclude myself and focus on one activity for a long time. i do also remember missing a lot of social cues and norms in family settings and would be told i was being rude or impolite bc i wouldn't look people in the eyes, wanted to be alone when family was over, didnt eat what we had for dinner, would be bored during a family outing, etc.

so i kinda wonder to myself how my parents had not caught onto this sooner. in hindsight a lot of these things point to something bigger. i still struggle with social cues and being "normal" but since therapy it has gotten a bit easier. has anyone else had some revelations over their childhood and signs that went unnoticed? was there anything you wished your parents had picked up on sooner?
