Friends in League 😡

It seems Duolingo implemented a new feature in which it reserves up to 2 slots in my league for my friends. Then whenever my friend finishes an exercise, even hours later, they still end up in the same league together with me. This is very annoying because a league is about competing, not working together. Any way to disable this without "unfriending" my friends?
