What happened to the nobles and high-ranking officials who lived in the Forbidden City after it was closed?

I'm currently watching a Historical Chinese Drama and was wondering what happened to the nobles, imperial family members, and high-ranking officials who lived or worked there after it ceased functioning as the imperial palace.

Were they forced to leave immediately, or was it a gradual process? What became of their homes, titles, and livelihoods? I'm especially curious about what happened after the last emperor left the Forbidden City and it was eventually turned into a museum.
