If you could restart your finance career today, what would you choose differently?
If I could restart my finance career today, I wouldn't chase the "most popular" qualification - I would first understand where I want my career to go. That's a mistake many students make. They choose a course because their friends are doing it, only to realize later that their interests lie elsewhere.
If your dream is to become a Chartered Accountant (CA), I would start preparing as early as possible. CA offers a strong foundation in accounting, auditing, taxation, financial reporting, and corporate law. It opens doors to careers in audit firms, multinational companies, consulting, banking, and even independent practice. Starting early also gives you more time to complete articleship and gain valuable practical experience.
At the same time, I would focus on building skills beyond the qualification itself:
- Learn Advanced Excel, Power BI, and financial modelling early.
- Develop communication and presentation skills alongside technical knowledge.
- Take internships seriously - they often teach more than textbooks.
- Stay open to emerging fields like FP&A, IFRS, business finance, and data analytics.
One lesson I'd definitely follow is this: don't compare your journey with someone else's timeline. Some people qualify quickly, while others take longer but build exceptional careers because they continuously improve their skills.
Whether you choose CA, CMA USA, ACCA, or another finance qualification, your long-term success depends on how well you combine knowledge with practical experience and business understanding. The qualification gets you through the door, but your skills, attitude, and willingness to learn are what help you grow into roles like Finance Manager, Finance Controller, Partner, or CFO.
