Looking for recommendations for a free word processing (writing) program.

Hi everyone, aspiring (poor) writer here.

I don't wanna pay an annual subscription to Microsoft office just so I can start writing. Could you please offer your best suggestions for a free substitute?

I don't know what features I should ask you about, other than it being easily translatable/transferable to Word in later years when I want to share it with beta readers, or hopefully a publisher. That, and I refuse to save my work to a cloud - I want to use my local drive only.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you 😊
