GSD peeing excessively during heartworm treatment.
So my big boy is, as the title says, going through heartworm treatment. I was told from the get-go that he would start peeing a lot more and might lose control of his bladder but that seemed small compared to losing him to heartworm without treatment. I was wrong. I would get him the treatment 100x over because he’s so worth it, but this has been causing way more of an issue than I thought it would.
We have to let him out constantly, which is mostly fine during the day when there’s at least one person at home at all times. At night though? He’s not loud enough to wake anyone up when he wants to go out so we wake up to multiple messes around the house. I had tried setting an alarm for every hour to let him out but that still wasn’t enough plus it was screwing my sleep schedule up.
I had ordered diapers that were supposed to be his size right when we started the treatment but they ended up being too small. I ordered another set that fit him better but weren’t nearly absorbent enough. I went to a few pet shops and still couldn’t find a bigger size that was absorbent enough.
He’s never been an outdoor dog so we can’t just force him to stay outside all night. We don’t have any kind of indoor pen or separate room to keep him in, either.
I’m ordering another kind of diaper which should hopefully be the right fit and everything but it will be at least 4 or 5 days before it gets here.
My question is, in the meantime, would it work if we kept him from drinking water 2 or so hours before bedtime and then just gave him water when we wake up? It would be a max of 7-8 hours without water. Would that be cruel to him?
