Passed my PMOCP exams (July 2026)

Celebration/Thank you πŸŽ‰

Happy to share that I passed my PMO-CP exam today! πŸŽ‰

Having completed both PMP and PMO-CP, I can honestly say I found PMO-CP harder than PMP. Not because the syllabus is larger, but because there is very little quality study material and almost no practice exams that truly reflect the actual exam.

I purchased the PMO-CP bundle. It was a decent starting point, but in my opinion it wasn't worth the price. The practical examples still felt quite vague.

I studied for about 3 weeks, and this is what worked for me:

  • Went through the PMO training prep twice.
  • Read the PMO-CP Study Guide twice.
  • Tried several practice exams, but none came close to the real exam, so I won't recommend any specific source.
  • I even used PMI Infinity to generate mock exams. While they were useful for revision, the actual exam was very different.

One thing that surprised me was how the real exam was structured. The questions themselves were generally straightforward, but the answer choices were extremely close to one another. You really have to read between the lines and identify the best answer rather than just a correct one. There were no obvious patterns or shortcuts.

Some of the topics that appeared frequently included:

  • PMO maturity
  • When to coach vs. when to mentor
  • PMO mandates and governance
  • Establishing PMO values
  • How the PMO supports both project managers and the organization
  • A few multiple-response questions

I finished the exam with about 12 minutes remaining, but I spent a lot of time comparing very similar answer options.

My biggest piece of advice is this: Don't just memorize definitions or rely on practice questions. Use the questions to test your thinking, but first ask yourself, "What would a mature, value-driven PMO actually do in this situation?" Focus on understanding the PMI PMO framework, principles, and mindset rather than looking for patterns in the answers.

I hope this helps anyone preparing for the PMO-CP exam. Best of luck to everyone taking it!
