I’ve spent a little over 200 hours on Black Widow, and after spending basically an entire day playing the rework in both Quick Play and Ranked, I can honestly say I’m disappointed.
The biggest reason is that I feel like they took away a lot of her skill expression to make her easier and more appealing to casual players. That honestly hurts the most. One of my favorite things about Widow was how difficult she was to master. She rewarded good aim, positioning, movement, and practice. Not every character needs to be easy, and Widow was one of the few heroes that really rewarded you for putting the time in.
Her mobility also feels so much worse. Her sprint is slower, and her jump barely gets you anywhere compared to before. You used to be able to fly between rooftops, reposition constantly, and grab high ground so smoothly. That movement was a huge part of what made her fun, and now it just feels clunky.
Her utility is also kind of a mess. What is even the point of her kick now if it doesn’t stun? It honestly feels like it’s just there because it has to be. Widow was already vulnerable to dive heroes, and now she has even less self-defense than before.
The new slam ability is… okay, I guess. It doesn’t do much damage, it’s on a **15-second cooldown**, and I genuinely don’t understand how it’s supposed to encourage Widow players to dive people. That’s never been Widow’s identity. After playing her, I don’t think I’ve intentionally used it to dive someone once because it just doesn’t feel worth it.
Her new primary fire is probably my favorite part of the rework, but it’ll never replace the old scope for me. The scope was like **70% of the reason I played Black Widow**. Landing those shots was what made her feel unique. Now it’s locked behind an ultimate with only five bullets.
The slow ability is good, though. I’ll absolutely give them credit for that. I actually like that addition.
I already know people are going to say, “She was a throw pick. She needed this.”
I really don’t agree.
The rework has only been out for a few days. Her pick rate has gone up, but her win rate has only increased by around **2%**. I honestly think once the excitement dies down, she’ll go right back to being one of the least-picked heroes, and people will start realizing this rework didn’t magically fix everything.
I also don’t think old Widow was ever as terrible as people made her out to be. I honestly think a lot of the people saying that just didn’t want to put the time into learning her. She was a hero that actually demanded good aim and game sense, and that’s okay.
Overall, I think she feels **slightly weaker**, but that’s honestly not even my biggest issue. My biggest issue is that she doesn’t feel like Black Widow anymore. They took away a lot of what made her rewarding to master, alienated a lot of her original player base, and turned her into what feels like a diet Punisher having an existential crisis.
If you’re enjoying the rework, though, I’m genuinely happy for you. I just miss the old Widow.
Thanks for reading.
