Why AI Coding tools make developer busy, not fast?
Every Artificial Intelligence development tool says it will make us write code ten times faster. But after using them for six months I have realized that we are not actually saving time. We have just traded typing for a job, which is maintaining the context of our work.
I call this the Context Tax. It comes down to three user experience frustrations with these tools:
- Prompt Drift: The tool is great at first.. After four hours of debugging it forgets the custom settings we made starts using old code and makes us keep telling it about our project so it can keep working.
- Micro-Review Exhaustion: The artificial intelligence generates eighty lines of code in two seconds. It takes us five minutes to check every line for mistakes or security problems. It is very tiring to check everything the artificial intelligence does.
- IDE Feature Creep: of just making it faster to fill in code every tool is adding more and more features to the user interface like chat boxes, explanations and popups that get in the way of how we normally work.
The Reality: The best artificial intelligence tools are not the ones that try to write the program. They are the tools that do one thing well, like writing tests.
Are you guys finding that these artificial intelligence development tools actually slow you down because you spend much time taking care of them? Which tools are actually easy to use and get it right?
