Fifteen years later and I still can't listen to Nujabes without it doing something to me, my heart, my mind and my soul

I don't even remember exactly how I found him. That's the honest truth. It was probably some late night on a forum, or Samurai Champloo playing on Adult Swim when I should've been asleep, and then suddenly there's this beat under a fight scene that sounds nothing like anything else I'd heard. Jazzy, warm, a little sad even when it wasn't trying to be. I didn't know the name Seba Jun yet. I just knew I needed to know who made that.

Turns out the answer was a quiet guy in Tokyo who was, without much fanfare, quietly rewriting what hip hop production could sound like. People throw around "lofi" now like it's an aesthetic you can buy in a preset pack.

Before Nujabes, it wasn't an aesthetic. It was just him, chopping jazz records and Brazilian bossa nova and soul samples into something that felt like it was breathing. He didn't invent sampling, obviously, but he invented a feeling, that specific kind of melancholy-but-hopeful thing that a thousand YouTube channels have been trying to replicate ever since without ever quite getting it right. That's why I call him the Godfather of lofi. Not as a nickname. As a fact.

And here's the part that still messes with me: he didn't get much time to do it in. He died in 2010, car accident, way too young, and by the time you sit with everything he actually left behind, it hits different. It's not a huge catalog. It's not supposed to feel complete. But somehow it does. Every track feels finished, intentional, like nothing was rushed even though, in hindsight, everything was.

If you want the one piece of proof though every single piece of work is pristine and amazing as it's own but it is the pinnacle of his work, it's Luv(sic) Hexalogy. I didn't get it the first time I heard it, six parts, same skeleton of a song, reworked over and over with Shing02 across years. Felt repetitive on paper. Then I actually sat with it front to back one night and understood what he was doing. Each version isn't a repeat, it's a photograph slowly coming into focus. A horn line shows up. A chord changes underneath you and you don't notice until it's already moved you somewhere else. By the time Part 6 hits, it's not just a song anymore, it's the payoff of everything before it, compressed into four minutes. I don't think there's a more complete piece of work in that whole genre, honestly. Maybe in hip hop production period.

People also sleep on the fact that he wasn't just a beatmaker. The man could actually DJ, actually mix, and that side of him bled into the production too, that instinct for how genres blend instead of collide. Jazz into soul into hip hop into bossa nova, moving like it was always meant to sit together. A lot of what modern DJs and producers do without thinking about it, he was doing it on purpose, first, quietly, without asking for credit.

I still put on Metaphorical Music or the Champloo soundtrack sometimes when I need to feel normal again. It still works. Every time.

Rest easy, Seba Jun. Short career. Whole lifetime of music. Genuinely one of the greatest to ever do it.

If you've never sat with the full Luv(sic) Hexalogy start to finish, do it this weekend. No skipping around. Just let it build.
