Claim against my USAA auto insurance by USAA insurance when I was a rental cars passenger (not operator)

Insurance/Claims

I need a reality check here guys to make sure that this normal because it seems sketchy.

Background info. My husband and I have different auto insurers. Mine is USAA. His is something else. Anyway, He (husband) rented a car in Washington state. His rental car was hit in a parking lot while he wasn’t present (parked car, parked legally in designated space). The driver that hit him took full responsibility for the damage which consisted of busted tail light and rear view parking camera. That driver provided their insurance info and apologized. They, like me, are/were insured by USAA.

Imagine my surprise when I began receiving calls from a USAA insurance agent fishing for information, implying that there had been injuries and asking if “everyone involved was okay”. I wasn’t even there and didn’t rent the car. I spoke to a USAA insurance agent over the phone and there is no misunderstanding. They claim it’s completely kosher to open a claim against my USAA insurance because my husband is listed as an operator of my vehicle. This wasn’t my vehicle!

The insurance agent also reminded me that this claim isn’t covered by them. Well no duh! But the claim still stands and is on my record permanently. No claim was ever made against my husbands insurance.

What gives?
