Do you guys feel like your DJ skills, tricks and style don't matter at all?
Like when we go up on decks, just because you can do an orbit scratch, beat juggling or tone play yet 99.9% of the time it doesn't matter. The only people who are impressed are other DJs but does it matter? It's not like they are going to walk up to you and hand you a gig because you wow them. You only get gigs when you can pull up a crowd.
It feels as if all that matters is your song choice, crowd reaction and your marketing game. I've talked to other DJs around me and some of them seem resigned, some of them refuse to care. But it's not always clear, those that choose to not care are almost always established DJs with their own network. While those that are forced to, are forced because they have no stability, building up their network and struggling to get consistent gigs.
