Can an EU Blue Card holder work full time and enrol in a full-time degree in Germany?

Hi everyone,

I live in Germany and hold an EU Blue Card based on my full-time employment. I am considering enrolling in a full-time degree programme at HDBW while keeping my full-time job.

HDBW told me that in Germany, a person cannot be both employed full time and enrolled as a full-time student. They said this was generally “just how it works in Germany”.

My question is specifically about enrolment:

Is there actually a German or Bavarian law that prohibits someone with an EU Blue Card and a regular full-time job from enrolling in a full-time university programme? Or is this more likely an internal university rule or programme-policy decision?

Has anyone here worked full time while formally enrolled in a full-time degree programme?
