Do you sand your spare ball?

So I just picked up a Storm Mix not long ago and had it drilled. I've been running into an issue where I'm not making spares like I did with my old spare ball. Someone suggested giving my spare ball a little bit of surface. I know I've seen some of the pros sand down their spare balls before, but I wasn't sure who else does it.

Has anyone here tried adding surface to a spare ball? If so, did it help or hurt your spare shooting?
