Strategic Feedback:
Market Shift Away from Vendor Lock-in and its Impact on Synology’s Future.
Dear Synology Executive and Product Management Team,
I am writing to share critical feedback regarding Synology’s current ecosystem strategy.
The global IT enterprise market is undergoing a massive shift. Top-tier storage leaders
like Dell EMC and NetApp are rapidly losing market share or restructuring because
their traditional business models, built on proprietary ecosystems and hardware-
enforced vendor lock-in, are no longer sustainable. Modern businesses demand open,
cloud-native, and hardware-agnostic solutions.
Unfortunately, Synology appears to be moving in the opposite direction. Historically,
your success was built on offering flexible, high-performance software (DSM)
compatible with a wide range of standard hardware. However, recent policies—such as
restricting compatibility to Synology-branded HDDs/SSDs and locking advanced
features behind proprietary hardware—are driving customers away.
This strategy poses severe risks to Synology's market position:
-- Stagnation in the Consumer/Prosumer Market: Your loyal community of tech
enthusiasts and SMBs chose Synology for its flexibility. Enforcing hardware
limitations alienates this core base.
-- Barriers to the Enterprise League: Entering the "Premier League" of enterprise
storage requires deep integration with open standards, multi-cloud environments,
and third-party hardware. Rigid vendor lock-in will prevent Synology from
competing at this level, as enterprise clients now actively avoid single-vendor traps.
-- The AI-Driven Competitor Leap: While some emerging competitors currently lag
behind DSM in software UX, the rise of Generative AI and AI-assisted development
tools is exponentially accelerating their software R&D. Competitors are rapidly
closing the software gap. If they pair modern, AI-developed software with open
hardware compatibility, Synology will lose its main competitive advantage.
-- Missed Innovation: While competitors adapt to open-source, Kubernetes-native
storage, and software-defined storage (SDS), a closed ecosystem will isolate
Synology from the global developer and partner community.
We highly value Synology’s software capabilities and user experience. However, to
survive and thrive in the current technological era, we strongly urge management to
reconsider the vendor lock-in approach. Opening your platform to broader hardware
compatibility and embracing open standards is the only way to secure Synology's
future growth.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this strategic insight.
Sincerely, demon_sl
