Concerns about pregnancy post-Nissen surgery for GERD
Having trouble finding this elsewhere so seeing if anyone here can help…
TLDR; I’m scared to get pregnant and tear my Nissan either from dry heaving constantly and/or the whole organs shifting and being squished thing and/or labor and delivery. Not sure I want to conceive bc of this…Please tell me your honest, blunt experiences with this!
For context, I’m 33f: I had a 360 Nissen and hiatal hernia repair almost exactly 5 years ago (which was a success!). I was absolutely miserable before the surgery and don’t regret having it; however, recovery from the surgery was one of the hardest and most painful things I’ve ever had to go through physically and emotionally. I had spine surgery just over a year ago, and I would do that 5x over than have this surgery again because of that alone.
I just had a EGD a few weeks ago to check my wrap since I’ve had some symptoms return and some other GI issues. Doc confirmed it has slipped a little, but nothing to require a revision surgery right now. The caveat is getting some of the symptoms under control now so it doesn’t escalate or do damage to my GI tract elsewhere. In my follow up appt, I asked about complications during or after pregnancy, and while he said he wouldn’t expect complications with the pregnancy itself because of this, complications in terms of GERD symptoms, damage to the surgery site, and need for a redo afterwards are pretty high.
All of this to say, I’m trying to hear from folks who have had a Nissan pre-pregnancy, got pregnant, and their experiences during that and postpartum. This is a major concern for me, so trying to gather any and all info because I even consider having kids. TIA!!
