You need therapy more than I do
Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve had some time to think. I don’t think this was ever going to be the right relationship for me because I’ve come to realize that you are fundamentally emotionally unavailable. There was never any healthy relationship to be had despite how you portrayed yourself to be. You have your own baggage and you are unhealed. Everything you felt for me was built on a fragile idealization of how I made you feel. Once I did not make you feel that way anymore, you were done.
I had high hopes at first because in the first month everything was really intense due to the idealization and love bombing. I was excited too. I was so happy to have met you. But I knew something felt off initially about all of the future statements at a month in. How would you know any of those things? I knew they were too good to be true then—that feeling only became more obvious to me as time went on and I started realizing you did not want to know me.
By the second month, I started hitting a brick wall every time you would deflect my heartfelt/romantic advances. Every time it happened I knew my heart was going to shrivel up and become cold the longer I stayed. I still stayed because I thought I could get through to you. Yet I could tell that you were indifferent to me in certain moments. I started becoming emotionally starved. I felt anxious. And later when you couldn’t tell me what you liked about me, it was then that I realized that I existed for your convenience in a girlfriend-shaped box. That I filled a role in your life and you had no interest in giving me genuine emotional connection because you are not connected to your own emotions yourself. Every emotion you felt for me was not for the person I was but the part I played, and it was shallow. We could never fall truly in love with each other at that depth.
By the end when I saw how you handled conflict, I finally knew you were an avoidant despite what that stupid test said.
And not just an avoidant but one with extreme projection—telling me that I needed therapy, that we handled conflict poorly, being defensive against me in conflict and expecting me to get over issues that were never resolved, not giving me any sort of repair after our first conflict so it would just continue. It fucking scared me on Thursday morning when I looked in the mirror and saw you glaring at me when I asked for time to think about you meeting up with Lily. I knew you were done with me then. I was no longer convenient to you.
It was never me. It was you. And yet you claimed that I was not vulnerable, but you are not honest with yourself. You were the victim in every story you told. You had no accountability and no ability to put yourself in another persons shoes. I had to do that for you, several times.
I could tell when we last spoke that you will never admit the impact that your family dynamic had on you. You avoid thinking too deeply about it because it is painful to accept that you have been severely neglected and treated insignificant by the those who are supposed to love you most for all of your life. I know what I said hurt you but I think you needed to hear it. Unless you do actual therapy for your childhood wounds you will keep repeating the same mistakes. You will keep encountering the same emotionally flat relationships that you perpetuate. You will attract the same people who want to love you but become emotionally starved themselves trying to break through to you.
I really tried so hard to love you. But you made me emotionally close off quickly. I felt guilty knowing I could not properly love you as I had in past relationships. I wanted to love you to my fullest capacity. I tried. And I somehow think you are the most avoidant person I have ever dated in my life. It was the strangest kind of loneliness where even if you were physically present, you were always emotionally distant. Like a shell of a partner just barely going through the motions to keep [insert girlfriend here] happy, while avoiding the deeper conversations to progress the relationship towards true emotional intimacy.
