video essays are cancerous for art and it's sad how bad they've become

Just bitching

just a rant

it used to be just a few people making video essays, people with a real interest in writing well and a sort of indie journalist-type approach. that's not to glamorize, there was always bad shit, but it's gotten so horrible since the pandemic. i watch these videos sometimes as background noise because i like perforating my brain and it's just so empty. writing mistakes, usually minor stuff, that an eighth grader would make, unprofessionalism, observations you could come up with in the shower.

i'm regularly disappointed by this medium, can you call it that? and there are some people who watch these and think they're educating themselves, think a video about why a movie is good or bad or whether a celebrity is cool or not can supplant going out and experiencing these things for yourself, forming opinions that are your own. that's the real scary part. maybe i'm grumpy and pretentious but i really do feel like youtuber audiences would benefit from just living life without someone's voice in their head. so many ideas that are other people's. and don't get me started on all the face talking at camera videos. it will all be forgotten in 5, 10 years. it's trash

there are still some i respect, won't name names but the people with real care still make good stuff for the most part. also i don't really care for her style but contrapoints did nothing wrong fight me call me a pseud or whatever ppl say
