Bleak Future

I am in my 40's and have considerable debt and $0 saved for retirement. I keep hearing how I still have X number of years left before retirement, and that I can save up. Does anyone feel that our futures are going to be miserable because social security may not be enough to cover our expenses? I just don't see how I won't ever not be able to stop working for the rest of my life to survive.

People are so optimistic because they have certain beliefs, which I don't. It is depressing that they think everything is going to work out. Like read the room. It is all very depressing.
