I built a covered call backtesting tool because I wanted to see which strike/tenor actually worked

I’ve been working on a covered call backtesting tool to quickly assess the potential of covered calls.

The questions it aims to answer are, which strike and tenor combinations actually worked on a given stock, and did they beat simply holding the underlying?

What it does:

  • Backtests covered call strategies across different expiries and OTM levels
  • Runs the grid across large-cap stocks and ETFs
  • Shows heatmaps for total return, outperformance vs buy-and-hold, assignment rate, and risk-adjusted return
  • Adds a monthly Sortino view so the results are not just ranked by headline return
  • Shows roll history so you can see when a strategy would have been assigned or capped
  • Compares DIY covered call strategies against funds like QYLD, XYLD, QQQI, GPIQ, TDAQ, etc.

The point is not to predict the perfect covered call trade. It is to make the trade-off visible:

  • did the premium actually compensate for the upside you gave away?
  • did the strategy only work because the market was in a bull run?
  • did the highest-return setup also look good on downside-adjusted metrics?
  • where did the fund beat a simple DIY strategy?

It is still early beta and free. I’m mainly looking for feedback on whether the metrics make sense, whether the heatmaps are readable, and what assumptions/options traders would want to see changed.
