How to Get a UK Phone Number (+44) Without Being in the UK
This comes up fairly often so worth a straightforward post on it.
If you need a UK number — whether you're an expat, running a business that serves British customers, or just want to stay reachable for UK banks and services — you don't need a SIM card, a UK address, or a physical presence there. A virtual number works over the internet and costs a fraction of what roaming does.
What you can actually get
Three main options with Zadarma:
Geographic numbers with local area codes — 020 for London, 0161 for Manchester, 0121 for Birmingham, 0113 for Leeds, and many more. If you're targeting customers in a specific city, this is the one that makes sense. People call local numbers. They don't call international ones.
Mobile numbers starting with 07, which support both voice calls and two-way SMS. Useful if you need to exchange texts with clients or use the number for business messaging.
Toll-free 0800 numbers, where the caller pays nothing and you cover the incoming call cost. Standard for customer support lines.
One thing to be aware of
Due to Ofcom anti-fraud rules, outgoing calls to UK numbers cannot be made from outside the UK using your virtual UK number. So this is a receive-calls solution, not a make-calls-to-the-UK solution.
How it compares to roaming on a UK SIM
A SIM gives you one mobile number, fair use limits, and no business features. A virtual number gives you a choice of area code, scales across a team, works on multiple devices simultaneously, and comes with a free cloud PBX, call recording, IVR menus, voicemail to email, and CRM integrations. Prices start from £1.50 per month for geographic numbers and £2 for mobile, both with free incoming calls.
Setup is straightforward
Register, top up your account, pick your number type and city, connect the Zadarma app on iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS, and set up where calls should go. Most numbers are activated the same day once document verification is done.
