Feature Request: Import Original TMDb Certifications and Add a Harmonised Age Rating
First of all, thank you for all the work that goes into TinyMediaManager. It has become one of the best media managers available, and I'd like to suggest a feature that could significantly improve parental controls and media filtering.
The Problem
TMDb stores movie certifications for many different countries, but currently TinyMediaManager only imports a limited subset of them. As a result, many movies from countries outside the commonly supported certification systems end up without an age rating in TMM.
This becomes a problem for applications such as Kodi, Jellyfin, Emby, or Plex that rely on metadata to create children's profiles and parental controls.
Because every country uses its own certification system (FSK, BBFC, MPA, ACB, Eirin, etc.), it is difficult to build reliable age-based filters across an international movie library.
Suggested Solution
Instead of storing only a single certification, TMM could maintain two certification fields.
1. Original Certification
This would preserve the official certification exactly as provided by TMDb.
Examples:
- US: PG-13
- Germany: FSK 12
- UK: 12A
- Australia: M
- Japan: G
This value should never be modified.
2. Harmonised Age Rating
A second field could automatically map the original certification to a universal age scale.
For example:
| Original | Harmonised |
|---|---|
| G | AGE_0 |
| PG | AGE_9 |
| PG-13 | AGE_12 |
| FSK 12 | AGE_12 |
| 12A | AGE_12 |
| M | AGE_15 |
| FSK 16 | AGE_16 |
| R / FSK 18 | AGE_18 |
The harmonised value could simply be stored as an integer or enum:
- 0
- 3
- 6
- 9
- 12
- 15
- 16
- 18
Why This Helps
Applications no longer need to understand dozens of different national certification systems.
Instead they only compare:
MovieAge <= ChildAge
For example:
Child profile (Age 12)
Visible:
- AGE_0
- AGE_3
- AGE_6
- AGE_9
- AGE_12
Hidden:
- AGE_15
- AGE_16
- AGE_18
This makes implementing children's profiles extremely simple while preserving the original certification for display.
Benefits
- Imports all available certifications from TMDb.
- Preserves the original official certification.
- Provides a universal rating that works across all countries.
- Makes parental controls much easier to implement.
- Works perfectly for international movie collections.
- Remains fully backward compatible.
Possible Implementation
When importing from TMDb:
- Import every available certification.
- Determine the movie's primary/original certification (based on release or production country, with configurable fallback rules if needed).
- Store it as
certification_original. - Automatically map it to
certification_universal.
Example:
Movie
├── certification_original = PG-13
└── certification_universal = AGE_12
Why I Think This Is Valuable
I'm currently developing a Kodi plugin that creates age-based Kids Profiles. A harmonised certification system would make filtering movies straightforward, regardless of their country of origin.
I also think this feature would benefit many other users and applications beyond Kodi, as media libraries are increasingly international and current certification systems don't translate well across different countries.
I'd be interested to hear what the community and the developers think about this approach.
