Hi Hat Technique (Tighter Open Hat Sound + Hi Hat Dynamics)

Question

Could anybody please kindly spare some tips/exercises/resources that might help me to tighten up my open hat sound, and to play ^(reeaallly) ^(gently) and quietly on the hats without just sounding like I'm hitting frying pans?

More specifically; I'd like to have more control of the exact length of my open hats - i.e comfortably differentiate between an open hat lasting a 16th or an 1/8th, cause at the moment it's just however long my left leg decided it was that time. I also want to have a greater range of dynamics so that I can play really tight and quiet cause at the moment my hats are just so overbearing.

For reference, I'm aiming toward the direction of a Yussef Dayes hat sound/style. Really subdued, articulated, and tight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTMi7l4ldsY
