How do you organize aliases in Proton Mail? (+aliases vs Additional Addresses vs Hide-my-email for different categories)

Discussion

Hi everyone,

I recently switched to Proton Mail Plus and imported everything from Outlook and Gmail. I want to set up a good system with organization + decent privacy, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options.

I have these main categories I want to handle:

  • Bank (finance/investments)
  • Official / Public (government-related)
  • Subscriptions (Spotify, PSN, YouTube Premium, etc.)
  • Development (GitHub + Hostinger)
  • Social media (notifications)
  • Primary address for real people (family/friends) + official mail

I’m trying to decide between:

  • +aliases
  • Additional Addresses
  • Hide-my-email aliases

My questions:

  1. How do you typically split your aliases across categories like finance, subscriptions, development, official/government, and social?
  2. Do you use Additional Addresses for important things (bank, official) and +aliases for everything else?
  3. Do you use Hide-my-email for specific categories, or mostly for random/one-off signups?
  4. Any rules of thumb you follow (e.g. “never use +aliases for finance” or similar)?
  5. Do you just use a custom domain and create additional Addresses

I want a system that’s not too complicated, but still gives me good organization and some privacy protection in case of data leaks.

I have read the article from Proton Proton Addresses and aliases

Would love to hear how others have set it up in practice.
