Is it unreasonable to never want a relationship with my brother again?
My brother has had a long pattern of treating me with disrespect, humiliation, and, in the past, physical aggression.
When he was around 13-14 years old, he intentionally held me underwater at the beach to the point where I genuinely thought he was trying to drown me. I ran to my mom hyperventilating, telling her what had happened, but she just shrugged it off and continued her phone call. She never confronted him about it. What made it worse was that he laughed afterward.
Another time, we got into a serious argument. I went to his room to confront him about the way he treated me, and he shoved me to the ground so hard that my head hit a piece of metal equipment in his room.
He’s no longer physically aggressive, but the verbal abuse never stopped. He constantly makes sexist remarks, telling me things like, “You’re a woman, it’s your job,” “Come massage my feet,” or “Be quiet and go clean my room.” I honestly don’t know whether he considers it a joke or not, but he says these things repeatedly and with a condescending attitude.
He also goes out of his way to undermine my accomplishments. I’ve been in medical school for four years, yet he’ll say things like, “Do you think you’re better than us now?” or, “I don’t see you as someone who can be a surgeon.” Whenever my mom compliments my English, he immediately tries to discredit me by pointing out small mistakes or demanding proof instead of just accepting it.
One comment that really stuck with me was when he told me I “need mental help because I can’t get over the trauma my mom caused.” He wasn’t saying it out of concern—he said it to humiliate me and use something deeply personal against me.
After years of this, I honestly don’t want a relationship with him anymore. If I had the choice, I would remove him from my life completely. I don’t think someone who consistently treats me this way deserves my time, energy, or emotional investment.
At the same time, part of me wonders if I’m being too harsh because he’s my brother. People often say, “He’s family,” as if that alone means I should keep trying.
