Cluster seizures
Here's my compiled information of my dogs seizure routine.
Seizure History Summary – 34 lb Female Beagle
Current Medication
\- Keppra ER (levetiracetam) 750 mg
\- Rescue seizure medication available at home.
Main Concern
My dog continues to have breakthrough cluster seizures despite Keppra ER. I have noticed a very consistent pattern before nearly every seizure and am wondering if these episodes could represent focal/autonomic seizures or if there is a gastrointestinal trigger lowering her seizure threshold.
Typical Sequence of Events
-
Begins repetitive lip licking.
-
Repeated swallowing/throat movements and gagging/dry heaving.
-
Appears fully conscious and responsive but becomes very fearful and starts trembling.
-
Tries to eat grass.
-
Grass causes vomiting.
-
After vomiting, she stands still for approximately 10 seconds while shaking.
-
She suddenly sprints.
-
She develops generalized cluster seizures.
Important Observations
\- I have never observed a seizure without vomiting first.
\- If I prevent her from eating grass and vomiting, she has not gone on to develop her typical cluster seizures.
\- I do not believe the grass itself is causing the seizures. I believe she is eating grass because she feels something abnormal beforehand and wants to vomit.
\- High excitement or stress (for example, anticipating a car ride) has also caused the same pattern: stomach upset → vomiting → seizure.
Feeding Pattern
Previously:
\- Food was available all day (free feeding).
\- She appeared to have fewer seizures, and when they occurred they were typically limited to a maximum of two. And happened every couple of months. Around 3-6 months apart.
Currently:
\- Switched to scheduled meals after moving.
\- Breakfast: approximately 5:30 AM on weekdays (7:00 AM weekends).
\- Dinner: approximately 7:00 at night.
Since changing feeding schedules, I have noticed:
\- Seizures occur before breakfast, late afternoon after many hours without food, or just before dinner.
\- I have not observed a seizure within a few hours after she has eaten.
Questions
1.it wont allow me to ask the question I want to but please see my profile and I have another post to includes the questions.
Also she gets her KEPPRA meds at 7am and 7 at night.
My goal is to reduce or prevent these seizures rather than only treating them once they start.
