I feel like I'm learning Godot WAY too slowly

help me

Hi. So there I am, trying to learn Godot by following the Make a 2D game section of the Documentation, when all of a sudden...I need to take a mental break. I've only gotten through a single section of the first or second webpage of this tutorial, and already I feel like I'm going to explode.

So there are several things that are happening. One, I am trying to make sure that the information I'm reading truly sinks in, but it doesn't feel like it that way. Even as simple as something like learning how to attach a script to a node or even creating a node in the first place feels like something I need to step back and just relax before I go back in and continue.

Second, that feeling creates a feeling of incompetence and wastes so much more time than was already wasted by the 'mental break'. This has already led to a 'crying' phase where I just sat there for like 30 minutes crying and being trapped in catastrophic scenarios and whatifs. Even if I wasn't crying, I would just sit there and do nothing, with no thoughts in my head, since I already feel burned from trying to learn what on the grand scheme of things feels so little.

Third, even if that crying scenario doesn't happen, I can never shake off the feeling that I won't be able to remember the exact details for next time. For example, the documentation talks about the _ready() and _process() functions, and already I feel like I learned them during GDQuest or something, and forgotten what they were for. Fortunately, _process() was quickly reiterated, but _ready()? Not so much. I have to take a guess based on previous experience, like maybe it's like the Initiate action or When first appeared action from Game Maker or something.

And this leads to one of the most frustrating aspects of all this. As it might've been alluded to, this isn't my first Game Dev rodeo. Far from it. I already made a topic or two about this, but to reiterate, I've been trying to make real headway into Game Dev via Game Maker for like a decade now. But after relatively minimal progress with not enough to show for it, I decided that enough was enough and needed to switch engines. Hence, Godot.

But all of this is so unfamiliar and scary. Nodes? Trees? Scenes? Signals? All of it felt so overwhelming at first. The actual programming fundamentals weren't a problem, other than some special functions like the $ shorthand or Input.is_action_pressed or something. But wrangling with the engine has been another matter entirely. And it only slows down my learning process at best.

And all of this before I go back in and try and continue with the learning process again. What should take maybe 30 minutes at most takes like an hour or two, or even longer, and I am sick and tired of feeling this way. I need to put my learning process on hyperdrive, but without compromising anything else, be it my mental state or my ability to process and remember the information, so that I can utilize it next time without having to scrounge the docs over and over and over and over and over.

There's more that I can say, but I gotta get back to learning. I just needed to let this out there and seek help on how to deal with this. Thanks for reading.
