How would medieval monasteries teach Latin to children?

Or, if they did not use conventional textbooks, what did they teach, in what order, and using which texts? I wanted to emulate the way great authors of the medieval era first learned Latin, and I just can't help but wonder what they used to build up vocabulary, which texts they memorized first, whether they learned grammar or vocabulary first etc.
