Hi! Long general query.

tl;dr our mini splits in three rooms have trouble. Two of them shutoff after making a ton of noise, like the one on the video. With the one in the video, it is generally in the night, when it has been running for several hours but there is not an extreme temperature differential. With the one in the large living room, it shuts off (after starting to sputter like this one… not always a water noise, sometimes… snappy, like breaking pita chips or stepping on plastic forks?) almost at random. Sometimes after a few hour but sometimes less than an hour. It comes back on hours later. A third one runs consistently, but water drips down the wall sometimes. The other two, which admittedly we almost never use, seem fine.

Our new home has Bryant mini splits installed in 2022. The dealer who installed them has since gone out of business, and most repair places I’ve called have said they will not repair mini splits they did not install. One dealer recommended place said yes, quotes his personal rate, had me fill out a form to confirm a different date and him coming out, then sent a friend on a different time who (was VERY nice but) said he didn’t know what was wrong, the video of the problem sounded like a pump or coolant issue, but he didn’t know, and then spent a fairly long time suggesting different batteries because his friends said the rechargeable ones don’t last. Very nice guy, but… our mini splits are still struggling.

(The battery may also be an issue, however… we tried charging them regularly, and they kept failing though… even had one unit turn off while the battery was plugged in. But due to the hugely noises, I’m not sure it’s just a battery thing?)

I’ve considered it’s because we set it too low, and it’s quite hot out. (We live near Sacramento, CA.) however, the previous homeowner had no issues with the cooling… and she was VERY through in the disclosures, she felt the machines weren’t enough to heat the largest room thoroughly and went so far as to add a gas insert to the fireplace, and still disclosed she found the heating element sufficient… but thought it cooled everything just fine. And… it shuts off on its own after it gets noisy not just at the hottest part of the day, but also in the middle of the night when the temp outside is often cooler than the house. So, maybe it’s not about us trying to cool too much. We only use one or two of the minis at once- two adults and three dogs- so I don’t think we are over using the whole system.

Are there things we can try on our own, as really NOT knowledgeable new home owners? If not, could someone advise what kinds of things to suggest to the HVAC guys? I spent two days calling places before I found the one who was willing to come last time- I will try more places, but may end up with the exact same tech as last time, who is very nice but didn’t know what to do.

He also said it seemed like it wasn’t dirty and needed no cleaning, but I have cleaned out slimy dark water several times on one of them. It just gets gross fast and was already gross at the time…so I feel he maybe isn’t super familiar with this machine.

any input is super appreciated.
