Tax extension filers: October 15 comes faster than you think

If you filed a tax extension, it may feel like tax season is over, but the extended filing deadline still matters.

For many federal individual taxpayers, a valid extension moves the filing deadline to October 15, 2026. However, the IRS explains that an extension gives extra time to file, not extra time to pay taxes owed. (IRS)

That means extension filers may want to keep a few dates in mind:

• April 15 was generally the deadline to request the extension and pay taxes owed.
• October 15 is generally the extended federal filing deadline.
• Interest and penalties may apply if taxes were not paid on time.
• State extension rules may be different.

The biggest mistake is waiting until October to start thinking about the return. Missing forms, business records, dependents, deductions, credits, or state requirements can take time to sort out.
