My partners mother went off on me about my decision

USA

I recently had an abortion last month. I had only been seeing the child’s father very briefly before I became pregnant. At first, I was excited because I’ve always wanted children. We got our families involved because I truly felt like I was going to keep the baby at that time. As time went on, I began having doubts about having to move in with him (he lives in a house on his mothers property) after such a short time knowing each other while also being first time parents. I didn’t know if I could trust him to be a good father because I didn’t know him enough. My finances are not good and I would have been fully reliant on him. I had a major gut feeling that keeping the baby was not a good decision for so many different reasons and so I made the decision that I had to make. I communicated with the child’s father every step of the way. I told him whenever he was ready to tell his mother that he should, and I wanted him to tell her so she knew where we were at. He waited until right before the abortion to tell her.

I recently went to go spend the day with him and his mother for her birthday and it’s the first time I have seen or spoken to her since the abortion. Granted I had only met her a couple of times to begin with and this relationship is still very new. As soon as I walked in the door she basically scolded me saying things like “you came to our home and got us excited for this baby” “you didn’t communicate with me and that’s not what families do” “you made it seem like you wanted the baby when you didn’t” (I really did in the beginning), “if you are going to be a part of this family going forward you need to communicate with me” and many other things along those lines. She did it in front of his entire family and made me feel like I was a child being scolded. I’m 26 years old and I barely know this woman. Am I wrong for feeling like I didn’t owe her an explanation? I communicated very clearly with the child’s father and told him he could tell his mom whenever he felt ready. We even tossed the idea of just saying that I had a miscarriage back-and-forth, but I told him that I think being honest is the right thing to do and we don’t want that hanging over our heads. The way I see it is that it was very uncalled for and quite frankly none of her business I did what I was supposed to do and communicated with my partner. It has really upset me because this decision was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. I’ve been really going through it the last couple of weeks because of it and his mom going off on me like that really shook me up.
